The “Adda Sud” Park

The “Adda Sud” Park stretches over the lodigiano territory and that of the Province of Cremona with its 230 km2, along the course of the river Adda, between Rivolta d’Adda to the north and Castelnuovo Bocca d’Adda to the south, at the mouth of the Po river.

The area of the park includes a stretch of the river typical of the plain, with wide agricultural zones, natural and semi-natural woods and poplar cultivations. Next to the river are some woods, wet zones and oxbows. Most of the marshlands belong to faunal businesses where, because of hunting purposes, there has been no drainage activity or indiscriminate wood cutting.

Particularly interesting from a naturalistic point of view are the nature Reserve “Adda Morta – Lanca della Rotta” (an ancient stretch of the river in the village of Castiglione d’Adda) and the Zerbaglia, where the biggest collective nest of the park can be observed.

The Boscone Estate

This nature reserve, whose name comes from the thick wood surrounding it (in Italian, indeed, “Boscone” means “big wood”), is placed inside the “Adda Sud” Park, between the provinces of Lodi and Cremona and it is a rare example of a typical Po Valley natural and practically uncontaminated environment. It stretches over about 300 hectares. There is the possibility to see a variety of animal species both free to move around the park or within pens, to go for a picnic, to fish both during the day and at night and to go for cruises on the river Adda.

Fish Farm “Paradiso”

The farm stretches over an area of 130.000 m2. The spring water coming from the resurgence of the Mortone flows throughout the whole fish farm within channels where it is possible to look at several species of fish, both by looking at them from the edge of the channels and through special underwater observation posts that open a window over the mysterious world living under the surface of the water.

Regional Nature Reserve “Monticchie”

This reserve protects an area of about 250 hectares. Because of its natural qualities, which favour the presence of a large number of fauna, Monticchie was included in 1969 amongst the areas of repopulation and capture and, ten years later, among the areas of protection of the fauna. After the requests advanced by the Town Administration and the local section of the WWF, the area is now under the bond of Lombardy Region, and in1988 it was given the denomination of Regional Nature Reserve.

The most important aspect of Monticchie from the point of view of the fauna is the presence of a very important collective nest consisting of about 600 couples of Ardeidae, among which the Grey Heron. Besides that, the wet environment favours the Italian Agile Frog and the Smooth Newt and the good quality of spring waters is proved by the presence of the White-clawed Crayfish.
